Middle East and Islamic Studies Collections: an Exhibition of Treasures

Introduction

This online exhibition is presented by Durham University Library to illustrate one of its flagship collections, the Middle Eastern and Islamic Studies Collection. Throughout its history, the collection of books and other library material relating to the Middle East and Islam has been one of the important features of Durham University Library. The main aim is to support the study of the Middle East, the Muslim world and Islam within Durham University and beyond as an academic discipline. The material in the Collection comes from a wide range of sources and in many languages, Middle Eastern as well as European. There are archival collections, rare printed books, in depth holdings of political and official publications, and extensive range of modern printed books as well as online resources. This exhibition provides a glimpse into this important source of information for the study of the Middle East and Islam with the hope that it will help promote awareness and exploitation of the resource by interested scholars and students.

The exhibits were drawn primarily from the Sudan and other archival holdings of the Palace Green Library, the Middle East Documentation Unit and the modern collections in the Main Library of Durham University Library.
