Recognition of Shaykh Rashid Bin Said as Ruler of Dubai
Donald Hawley Papers
Donald Hawley’s early career was spent in the Sudan where he served with the Sudan Defence Force (1941-1944), the Sudan Political Service (1944-1947) and the Sudan Judiciary. He resigned as Chief Registrar just prior to Sudanese independence in 1955. The following year he was appointed to HM Foreign Service, serving in the Trucial States (1958-1961), Egypt (1962-1964), Nigeria (1965-1967), Iraq (1968-1971) and Muscat (1971). From 1971 to 1975 he was Ambassador to Oman and from 1975 to 1977 served as Assistant Under Secretary of State at the F.O. He retired in 1981 after four years as British High Commissioner in Malaysia. His activities in retirement reflect a continuing interest in affairs in the Middle and Far East.

In addition to detailed personal letters home to his parents, Donald Hawley
also wrote lengthier accounts of his life in the Trucial States which
were circulated among family and friends. Here, writing in 1958, he describes
Dubai under Shaykh Rashid bin Said.
