Col C.E. Wilson’s views on T.E. Lawrence
The Sudan Archive contains much material relating to neighbouring states
in the Middle East and N. Africa, including a substantial section on the
Arab Revolt in the Wingate and Clayton Papers. Col Wilson acted as Sir
Reginald Wingate’s representative at Jiddah from 1916-1919 and as
such came into frequent contact with T.E. Lawrence during the course of
the Arab revolt. In this letter to G.F. Clayton of 22 November 1916 he
refers to Lawrence in the following terms: “Lawrence wants kicking
and kicking hard…At present I look upon him as a bumptious young
ass…”
