Contents description: view of the old Shincliffe Bridge, with work underway in the foreground on the foundations for the new bridge. A wooden enclosure like a coffer dam has been built on the shore with many workmen visible in and around it. A horse powered gin mill like pumping mechanism drains the excess water into a channel downstream.
The new bridge was designed by Ignatius Bonomi to replace the unstable old bridge, and built between 1824 and 1826 (fixing the time of the drawing of the source image as 1824). The foundations proved difficult to establish, and it is this phase of the work that is depicted. This print is listed in Andrews' catalogue of 1835, giving a date range of 1826-1835 and probably printed in Durham.
